The du0 of India tennis stalwart and his new partner Andre Sa knocked out top seeds Treat Huey and Max Mirnyi from the ASB Classic in Auckland on January 11. In their maiden win together, the Indo-Brazilian duo scored 7-6(3), 6-3 to enter the quarterfinals of the US $508,360 hard court event — an Australia Open series tournament.
Their partnership lasted for one hour 14 minutes within which they lost their serve once and broke their rivals twice, the Statesman reported.
Their next face-off is with the wildcard pair of Marcus Daniell and Marcelo Deloliner.
Paes and Daniell will face each other in the doubles rubber of the upcoming Asia/Oceania Group I tie in February. This game will very likely offer Paes a chance to have a measure of Daniell, who will play in New Zealand’s team, for the future match.
Meanwhile, top seeds Indian tennis giant Sania Mirza and her partner Barbora Strycova reached the semi-finals of the WTA Apia International with a 6-3 6-4 win over wildcard entrants Madison Brengle and Arina Rodionova.
