Movie Review- Dangal

Movie cast: Aamir Khan, Sakshi Tanwar, Fatima Sana Sheikh, Sanya Malhotra, Zaira Wasim, Suhani Bhatnagar, Ritwik Sahore, Aparshakti Khurana, Girish Kulkarni

Movie director: Nitesh Tiwari

Movie rating: Three stars

There comes a time in every actor’s life where he/she has to decide whether to look good on screen or to perform. For Bollywood mega-star, Aamir Khan performance has always topped the priority list, and with his latest release for which he gained 22 kilos, the actor has once again proved his perfection.

The flick narrates the story of a Haryanvi wrestler, Mahavir Singh Phogat, who after losing his hope of having a son, trains his daughters Geeta and Babita to make wrestling history. Thus breaking the taboo of Indian women participating in a sport, which is by far dominated by men.

What works very well for the film is the script, Director Nitesh Tiwari, along with Piyush Gupta, Shreyas Jain, and Nikhil Mehrotra should be given a handful of compliments for their tongue-in-cheek quality, peppered with humour and several poignant father-daughter emotions all through.

However, certain scenes in the film that depicted how our society always wants a mother to have a son, and how a girl faces the brutal world waiting to crush her have not been so impactful.

The backdrop throughout the film is very rustic, earthy, and connects a viewer to the place, where the narration is set in.

Aamir Khan perfectly plays the character of a ‘ziddi’ yet a sensitive parent. Fatima Sana Sheikh and Sanya Malhotra, who have portrayed the character of Geeta and Babita, respectively, to quite an extent, are able to grab eyeballs with their acting. Sakshi Tanwar, who plays the role of Khan’s wife is restrained yet effective throughout the narration.

One the whole, the flick sets itself on dual-parameter, firstly, that it is a popular sport, and about the people who play it. Secondly,  it makes a very strong statement over the girl-boy equality in the place, where girls are killed in the mother’s womb.

Music director Pritam and lyricist Amitabh Bhattacharya have successfully managed an earthy soundtrack for the movie with Daler Mehndi’s title track pumping up the adrenaline. The film also has a soft track Gilheriyaan, complimenting it is a Haryanvi rap, hip-hop Haanikarak Bapu, and the Dhakaad number.

Big B and Priyanka Chopra: The new faces of Incredible India

Amitabh Bachchan and Priyanka Chopra will now replace Aamir Khan in the Incredible India campaign. Unlike last time when the campaign was handed over to a private agency, this time around the Ministry of Tourism has recruited the two actors directly. Amitabh Bachchan is also the brand ambassador of Gujarat Tourism.

While the decision of making Amitabh Bachchan the face of the campaign was taken a few days ago, the move to rope in Priyanka as well came after her astounding success in her American Television series ‘Quantico’, which went on to win her the People’s Choice Awards.

The Ministry had removed Aamir Khan a few weeks back, after his contract with the campaign had expired. Aamir Khan had been the mascot of the brand for a decade. Although there has been widespread speculation linking Aamir’s removal to his ‘intolerance debate’; tourism minister Mahesh Sharma dropped such claims.

The official announcement regarding the appointment of the actors’ will be made after January 26.

Contract expiry reason behind Aamir’s removal from Incredible India

Bollywood superstar Aamir Khan, whose comments on the country’s intolerance had created a controversy, ceased to be the face for ‘Incredible India’ campaign as his contract for it has expired. He was the face of the campaign for the past ten years.

Minister of state for aviation and tourism Mahesh Sharma confirmed the development through a tweet, “Aamir Khan ceases to be the mascot for government’s Incredible India campaign, contract for which has expired.’’

While the tourism ministry claims that the end of their contract with McCann Worldwide agency for ‘Atithi Devo Bhava’ campaign led to the termination of Aamir Khan, many suspect the removal of Aamir Khan to be the consequence of his comments on intolerance.

“I respect the decision of the government to discontinue with my services. I am sure they will take all appropriate steps to do what is best for the country,” Aamir said in a statement after the ministry said his contract was over. Aamir also said “it had been an ‘honour and a pleasure’ for him to be the Brand Ambassador for the Incredible India campaign for the past 10 years.”

Indications were that Aamir is unlikely to figure in the future campaign. Megastar Amitabh Bachchan, brand ambassador of Gujarat tourism, is the first choice of the Government as the new face and a replacement of Aamir Khan for the Incredible India campaign.

Government denies Aamir Khan’s removal from tourism campaign

New Delhi: On Wednesday, following the reports of Aamir Khan’s removal from Incredible India campaign flooded the internet, the government released a denial statement regarding the issue. The campaign that aims to promote tourism in the country had Aamir Khan as its brand ambassador prior to the dropping.

Clarifying that it had a contractual engagement with the creative agency McCann Worldgroup which was involved in the production of the social awareness campaign, the ministry said that Mr. Khan featured under it.

The internet flooded with news reports after the tweet of Amity Malviya surfaced saying that Aamir Khan has been removed as brand ambassador of Incredible. Mr. Malviya is involved with handling the IT, social media management cell and website of the BJP.

Last year, in November Aamir Khan has been entangled in a controversy after having commented that his wife Kiran Rao had been planning to move out of India due to the existence of an “intolerant” environment in the country.

Aamir Khan while at Ramnath Goenka Excellence in Journalism Awards ceremony, said, “As an individual, as part of this country as a citizen, we read in the papers what is happening, we see it on the news and certainly, I have been alarmed. I cannot deny. I have been alarmed by a number of incidents”.
