A head constable, Sanjay Shinde from the Indian Reserve Battalion (IRB) at Kolhapur killed three civilians on January 16, 2018. He was posted at the State Reserve Police Force (SRPF) in Daund, around 80kms from Pune, where the incident occurred. A police official stated that Shinde opened fire on three men near the crowded areas of Borawake Nagar and Morinagar Chowk in Daund, as reported by The Times of India.
The victims gunned down by Shinde were identified as Anil Jadhav, Gopal Shinde and Prashant Pawar. All the three of them were killed on the spot. Two of the deceased were attacked when they were riding on a motorbike. The killings occurred in broad daylight in the presence of a huge crowd. The sudden firing resulted in helter-skelter and the traumatized civilians began to hide out of fear. There was a gap of 15 minutes between the killings, as per Pune Mirror reports. According to sources, one of the victims killed in the attack was a close relative of the accused.
Sandip Pakhale, superintendent of police in Baramati region claimed that Shinde procured a pistol from the SRPF armoury. He also suggested old rivalry between the victims and the accused over some private issue or financial matters.
After committing the crime, Shinde escaped and tried to seek shelter in a building where he resided with his family. The Daund policemen followed him there in order to arrest him. Since Shinde was equipped with a pistol, more police staff including SRPF jawans were deployed to the area. However, they failed in their attempt to catch him as Shinde absconded before the arrival of the police. Following continuous search operations, the police learnt that Shinde was hiding in Supa village. Pakhale told Pune Mirror that they successfully trapped Shinde and recovered the pistol from him.
Reacting to this issue, other SRPF officers revealed that Sanjay Shinde was addicted to gambling and prostitution. He allegedly was in debt and owed money to a number of people. And often entered into scuffles with his co-workers.

Indian cricketer Ajinkya Rahane’s father, Madhukar Baburao Rahane, was arrested on Friday in Kolhapur after his car mowed down an elderly woman. The deceased, identified as Ashatai Kamble, was hit by Madhukar’s car on the national highway near Kagal.
Reports suggest that the India Vice-Captain’s father, along with his mother and sister, were on their way for a vacation to Konkan while the incident took place. Although Madhukar Rahane was booked for negligent driving, it is unclear who was driving the car at the time of the accident.
The victim, Ashatai, was rushed to the nearest hospital after the accident but succumbed to her injuries during the treatment. Inspector of Kagal Police Station, Audumbar Patil, said that Kamble was crossing the road and got scared with the speeding vehicles coming in. At a point, she stopped in between the lanes and was hit by Rahane’s i20. The lady was a resident of Savitrinagar in Ichalkaranji.
A case was registered at the Kagal police station under sections 304 (a) [causing death by negligence], 289 (negligent conduct), 337, 338 (Causing grievous hurt by act endangering life or personal safety of others) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and the Motor Vehicles Act.
Madhukar Rahane has now been released on bail, while Ajinkya is currently with the Indian squad in the Sri Lanka series.

A kindergarten student was assaulted by her male physical education teacher on Friday, December 1st. The incident was reported to have occurred at GD Birla Centre for Education in Ranikuthi, Kolkata.
“Our daughter rushed home crying. We noticed that her uniform had blood stains. She was taken to SSKM Hospital. The doctors informed that she had been sexually abused. Later, she told us that her teacher had trapped her,” her father mentioned in his statement to The Indian Express.
Partha Chatterjee in an interview stated, that the state government along with the West Bengal Board of Secondary Education has set up a committee to probe the incident. Actions of the school would be monitored so that they consider the security of students as a top priority. Strong measures would be taken to ensure that the accused is punished. He also ensured assistance to the parents.
The Principal informed India Today, that they have begun to investigate the issue thoroughly. CCTV cameras would soon be installed in the school. She further said that the accused had seven years of teaching experience in the school, and had no accusations against him previously.
Agitating parents are reluctant to send their wards to the school till safety measures are strictly formulated and followed. They, along with the girl’s father, protested and demanded the authorities to take necessary action immediately. Police have detained the accused and other staff of the school.

The CCTV footage of a property dealer, Wazid, being brutally murdered surfaced on Wednesday a month after the incident took place. The businessman was shot around twenty times in North East Delhi’s Brahmapuri area on October 22nd, 2017.
According to NDTV, the CCTV footage shows the gruesome ongoings of the event in detail, where the property dealer, Wazid, is spotted as he is being chased by three men on a motorcycle. In a desperate attempt of ensure his survival, Wazid enters his house to find sanctuary. The footage then progress to show Wazid falling on the road, as his attacker looms over him, wearing a helmet.
NewsEleven reports, the attacker disguised in a helmet ceaselessly open firing at the victim without any speck of remorse. The video that has surfaced is extremely disturbing to watch. Soon thereafter, the attacker’s partners emerge out of a building and join him in shooting the property dealer. The criminals then fled the scene, leaving Wazid alone to bleed out and succumb to his injuries. Three men were arrested earlier this month as prime suspects in this case, by the Delhi police. The police stated that this incident was an outcome of gang rivalries.

In a shocking incidence at a market near Billhaur Nagar Palika in Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh; a Hindi newspaper journalist was shot dead in broad daylight. The victim, identified as Naveen Gupta, worked for a Hindi daily in the area.
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath was quick to pay his condolences and order an immediate probe to investigate the murder. The Police have filed a case of murder and already questioned six to seven suspects for an early lead.
The incident occurred at 5:30 pm when three people riding a two-wheeler arrived at the family shop where Naveen was sitting. As soon as Naveen got up from the shop, the trio rushed on the motorbike and sprayed five bullets on Gupta. They immediately fled the spot.
Family members and local shopkeepers rushed Gupta to the hospital, but he was declared brought dead by the doctors. Police said that motive behind the murder is yet to be ascertained, but suspect some kind of enmity as the prime motive.
Naveen Gupta is now the second journalist to be killed in the past month. Sudip Datta Bhaumick, reporter of a Bengali daily ‘Syandan Patrika’, was shot dead on November 22. Another journalist, Santanu Bhowmick, was also killed he went to cover an agitation by the Indigenous Peoples Front of Tripura (IPFT).
The most high profile murder came when senior journalist Gauri Lankesh was shot dead in front of her house in Bengaluru on September 5, a crime that created massive outrage in public.
Freedom fighter Bal Gangadhar Tilak’s great grandson, Rohit Tilak has been booked with charges for allegedly raping a woman. She was also forced into “unnatural sex”. A case had been filed against him on Monday night. The police informed The Indian Express.
NDTV reported that the woman was 40 years of age and knew (Rohit) Tilak for a couple of years. The police informed that she had been raped repeatedly with the excuse of marriage. Tilak has been accused with charges of rape, voluntarily causing hurt, unnatural offences, insult with an intent to provoke breach of peace and criminal intimidation based on numerous sections of the Indian Penal Code.
The Times of India mentions that he also happens to be the grandson of late Jayantrao Tilak, a senior Congress leader and Member of Parliament. Mukta Tilak, the Bharatiya Janata Party Mayor of Pune is his aunt. He had contested the Maharashtra Assembly Polls in 2014. He was the Congress candidate from Kasba Peth seat in Pune; and lost to Girish Bapat, from the BJP.
The Police informed that the 40 year old complainant separated from her husband ten years ago. She has been in touch with Tilak since two years.

Paralympic gold medallist from South Africa Oscar Pistorius has been condemned to six years of jail by Judge Thokozile Mazika for the murder of his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp. Pistorius was taken to jail immediately after the hearing.
Reeva’s father Barry was quoted saying, “I wouldn’t like to say” when asked how does he feel, while his wife looking distraught walked away. In a quick interview to the sky news Barry told, “I hope not to be back here again.”
“A fallen hero” as the judge addressed him, Oscar spoke to his family briefly and kissed his sister goodbye. His brother Carl reacted on social media after the judgment writing, “The record has been set straight and justice done. The truth will always prevail.”
After serving almost a year in jail, he was freed to serve the remainder of his term in house arrest in his uncle’s home in the capital in 2015. Arguments of preferential treatment surfaced right after this from a group of activists and the state had called for him to receive no less than a fifteen year sentence for murder.
Pistorius had shot his girlfriend four times through his bedroom toilet door in the early hours of Valentine’s Day in 2013 , claiming he mistook her for a burglar.
