Indian cricketer Ajinkya Rahane’s father, Madhukar Baburao Rahane, was arrested on Friday in Kolhapur after his car mowed down an elderly woman. The deceased, identified as Ashatai Kamble, was hit by Madhukar’s car on the national highway near Kagal.
Reports suggest that the India Vice-Captain’s father, along with his mother and sister, were on their way for a vacation to Konkan while the incident took place. Although Madhukar Rahane was booked for negligent driving, it is unclear who was driving the car at the time of the accident.
The victim, Ashatai, was rushed to the nearest hospital after the accident but succumbed to her injuries during the treatment. Inspector of Kagal Police Station, Audumbar Patil, said that Kamble was crossing the road and got scared with the speeding vehicles coming in. At a point, she stopped in between the lanes and was hit by Rahane’s i20. The lady was a resident of Savitrinagar in Ichalkaranji.
A case was registered at the Kagal police station under sections 304 (a) [causing death by negligence], 289 (negligent conduct), 337, 338 (Causing grievous hurt by act endangering life or personal safety of others) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and the Motor Vehicles Act.
Madhukar Rahane has now been released on bail, while Ajinkya is currently with the Indian squad in the Sri Lanka series.
