Twelve more people including three minors were arrested by district police in connection with the Koregaon Bhima Violence on January 1. The violence broke out due to caste clashes in which one person was killed.
Seventeen people were earlier arrested by the police in connection with the incident. The violence took place during the bicentennial event to memorialize the Koregaon-Bhima battle in which Peshwas lost to the British imperial army comprising of Dalits.
On January 1, numerous vehicles, shops, houses were vandalized by mobs in areas near Koregaon Bhima. Several Dalits visit the Koregaon Ranstambh (victory pillar) every year to commemorate the Koregaon Bhima battle.
Pune district SP Suvez Haque said that those who were arrested on Monday were from the Maratha and Dalit communities. The police are trying to analyse CCTV footages and video recordings to see and identify the anti-social elements in the violence on January 1.
The police also booked six members of the Kabir Kala Manch, a radical cultural group for making provocative remarks during the Elgaar Parishad held on December 31, a day before the violence broke out.
JNU leader Umar Khalid, Dalit MLA from Gujarat Jignesh Mevani,Bharip Bahujan Mahasangh President Prakash Ambedkar and Late Rohit Vemula’s mother Radhika Vemula attended the Elgaar Parishad.
Mevani and Khalid have already been charged by the police for making provocative remarks to create rifts between the Dalits and the Marathas.

Sunil Rastogi a 38- year old man has been arrested on charges of sexually assaulting minor school girls after several complaints were registered against him in Delhi. His victims included school-going minors between 9-10 years of age.
Rastogi who works as a tailor was arrested from Rudrapur in Uttarakhand. He lived in Delhi before he shifted to Rudrapur in 2004. The accused is married and is a father of five, including three daughters. His children are now being interrogated to find if he had ever assaulted them as well. According to the NDTV, the police said, “Whenever he would find any minor girl going to home from school, he used to mislead her on the pretext that her father had sent some clothes or some other articles to give her and take her to an isolated place to sexually assault them.
A case was registered against an unidentified man on December 13, 2016, on the statement of a minor girl, in New Ashok Nagar police station. Later on January 10, 2017, two cases of attempted kidnapping of minors, were reported. The investigators found similarities in the manner of all the three crime committed. As a result, the police suspected that it was the same person involved in all of them.
The accused further confessed to assaulting minors in New Ashok Nagar, Delhi, Ghaziabad and Rudrapur. The image of the accused was developed from the CCTV footage from the area of crime committed. Cases of drugs, theft and molestation have been registered against him in the past. Currently, he is being interrogated for his other criminal acts.
