A male patient alleged that he was beaten up by a senior doctor from the nephrology department in the state-run Shriram Chandra Bhanj Medical College for consulting a junior doctor on Thursday.
The patient belongs to the Below Poverty Line (BPL) category and is a native of Bargarh district. He said that he was getting treatment under the consultation of the senior doctor for the past four months and had been receiving medicines from the Odisha State Treatment Fund.
The patient said that on Thursday, he had come for further treatment and consulted the junior doctor on duty at the OPD after getting an outpatient ticket. This angered the senior doctor, who, he alleged, kicked and slapped him saying why he did not come on the day when he had outdoor duty.
The man also claimed that the senior doctor tore his outpatient ticket, and added that he has informed the hospital’s superintendent Shyama Kanungo about the incident.
However, the man’s allegations were denied by the senior doctor saying he never assaulted the patient.
The Hospital Superintendent Kanungo has confirmed receiving complaint on the matter.
This is not the first time that there has been a case regarding assault in SCB Medical College Hospital. On May 30, 2017, a case was registered by the police regarding the assault of attendants of a patient by junior doctors of the hospital.
