The Indian American father of three-year-old Sherin Mathews, Mr Wesley Mathews is accused of her murder at Texas. The girl had gone missing in October after the parents had put her outside their apartment as a punishment. The Dallas police inform that Mathews has changed his version of stories constantly, and has not been able to take a stance. On Friday, he will be indicated with capital murder if found guilty and be sentenced to death or life imprisonment.

The adopted girl’s mother, Sini Mathews, has also faced abandonment charges in the month of November. A night before the child died on October 7th, 2017, she was left alone at her home, while her parents and their 4-year-old biological daughter went out for dinner.

Hurricane Harvey: Trump’s first Tempest

First Category 4 hurricane to hit the US (United States), bringing one-meter of precipitation, on late Friday. Departure orders were further issued to enable Texans to look for protection from winds of up to 215 km/h. Trump signs disaster order as Tempest with winds of up to 215km every hour is dreaded to be exceedingly dangerous to hit US mainland in 12 years.

The epicentre of Hurricane Harvey hit land between the Port of Aransas and Port O’Connor, Texas late on Friday, as per the National Hurricane Center. It perforated extending hundreds of kilometres into the Gulf of Mexico.

It is regarded as the most powerful to hit the terrain since 2005. Prior to that Wilma struck Florida in 2005, and incurred billions of dollars in harm. Before Wilma, Hurricane Katrina walloped New Orleans around the same time, turning into a noteworthy disappointment of the administration of George W Bush.

Surprisingly so, US President Donald Trump signed a debacle declaration for Texas, authorizing government reserves for help hours before the storm. Prior in the day, Texas Governor Greg Abbott had asked Trump to preemptively announce Harvey a “major disaster” with a specific end goal to speed government help.

“We can obviously tell already at this stage this is going to be a very major disaster,” Abbot said, as more than 1,000 National Guardsmen were activated. It’s thus, a major test for trump, as it’s the first natural disaster in his presidency.

“I encourage everyone in the path of #HurricaneHarvey to heed the advice & orders of their local and state officials,” the Trump tweet appeared on Friday.

5 Policemen Dead, 7 Injured in Dallas Shootings

A peaceful protest in downtown Dallas turned chaotic when snipers opened fire on policemen on guard, killing 5 and injuring 7. Officials have not confirmed yet whether this incident is connected to the fatal shootings of two black men by the police earlier this week, but sources speculate that this might be a regrettable aftermath.

The attack was said to be carefully planned and highly coordinated as fresh gunfire broke out a little before 9 p.m., during the protests, where the snipers began shooting the officers. Protestors ran for cover, while the policemen on duty engaged in heavy gunfire with the suspects, who had settled on an elevated platform.

According to Mike Rawlings, Mayor of Dallas, SWAT officers arrived on scene and a three-hour long exchange of gunfire took place, where two civilians were caught in the crossfire as well. David Brown, Police Chief said that the gunmen threatened stating that there were explosives all over the place, but immediate disposal of the bomb squad did not churn up any devices.

Of the four snipers, one killed himself, while the other three have been arrested by the police officers. The dedication and bravery of the officers on scene was highly commended by the chief and officials around the country alike.

Addressing the event, Obama called it, “vicious, calculated and despicable”. The attack is said to be one of the worst on law enforcement since the attacks of 9/11.

Case of Zika virus through sexual transmission reported in Texas

The officials from the Dallas County health department have reported two victims of the deadly Zika virus. The two patients are natives of Texas and had tested positive. As per the official report, one victim caught infection while in Venezuela and the other tested positive through sexual transmission.

“Zika can be transmitted by a number of ways. It can be transmitted from mosquitos to humans, humans to mosquitoes and also by sexual contact,” said Zachary Thompson, the director of  the Dallas County health department. He also added that an awareness campaign would soon be organized for  educating the masses regarding safe sex.

Zika virus (ZIKV) is a flavivirus, transmitted by day-time active Aedes mosquitos, that causes nervous disorders. It can also penetrate through the placenta affecting the unborn fetus resulting in brain shrinkage.

The U.S Center for Disease Control and Prevention has rolled out some guild lines to its citizens for the prevention. Also recently, the World Health Organization(WHO) had declared the spread of the virus as a global emergency.

Texas engulfed in anti-abortion drama

The future of the bill is still undecided.

Last week, Senator Wendy Davis confidently attempted a 13-hour filibuster to the Texas anti-abortion bill (that would ban abortions after 20 weeks). The 50-year old Democratic merely stood and talked without any food or toilet breaks.

When Lieutenant Governor David Dewhurst, a Republican, silenced her using parliamentary mechanics, scores of anti-abortion supporters became so loud that no decision could be taken on the bill before the midnight deadline. This is how the Democrats earned a victory in the GOP-dominated Legislature.

However, the Republicans took the defeat to heart. During the second session on Monday, Dewhurst stated that instead of taking two-thirds vote to approve a bill before it can be considered for a floor vote, it would simply take majority this time.

This time, Dewhurst also took no chances with the 5,000 people who were furiously protesting against the proposed abortion legislature on Monday. Security was much tighter than the last time.

On the House side, State Affairs Chairman Byron Cook, a Republican, said he will allow less than nine hours of public testimony on the anti-abortion bill. Public protests erupted two weeks ago when he denied more than 260 women the chance to speak in the last session.

Although no decision will be taken during this week owing to July 4 celebrations, committees planned to hold public hearings on the bill.

Cook said his committee can approve the bill early Wednesday. The earliest the bill can pass the full Legislature is July 10 unless the Republican majorities defer the rules to move the date sooner.
