On Monday, Yogi Adityanath, Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh took oath as a member of the State Legislative Council. Deputy Chief Ministers, Keshav Prasad Maurya, Dinesh Sharma and ministers, Swantradev Singh and Mohsin Raza, also took oath today. Raza, a minister of state, is the only Muslim member of the 48-member council of ministers led by Adityanath. Four Samajwadi Party (SP) and one Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) MLCs had quit their seats in August following which these five were elected in by-polls. Ramesh Yadav, Chairman of the Legislative Council, administered the oath at a function in Tilak Hall of the Legislative Building in Lucknow.
Candidates including CM are required to get elected to either of the two houses- Vidhana Sabha or Vidhana Parishad- to become a member of the council of ministers. Each of these five ministers had to get elected to either of the two houses before September 19th in order to continue their office.
This makes Adityanath the third successive Chief minister to choose the upper house after Akhilesh Yadav (SP) and Mayawati (BSP).
