Pune welcomes Republic Day with 150 WiFi Hotspots

The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) in collaboration with Pune Smart City Development Corporation Limited (PSCDCL), is set to inaugurate 150 free WiFi hotspots across the city on the occasion of Republic Day. Pune residents will now be able to access free internet facility in 199 locations. According to reports from Sakal Times, Google for the first time has tied by with a municipal body like PMC to enable them to set up ‘Google Stations’ that offer free WiFi service.

The citizens will be provided with 50MB data free of cost in hotspot areas at a speed of 512 kbps. Usage above the given limit will be charged with a certain amount for surfing private websites, while usage of government portals will remain free. The users within the network range will have to log-in to the WiFi using a One Time Password (OTP) that will be sent to their registered mobile numbers. This plan is aimed towards the ‘Pune Smart City’ project.

In their statement to the media, PMC said that they wish to reach out to the entire city with their free WiFi connectivity plan and wish to make Pune a digital city by 2020. The locations that are covered in the current plan include public places like hospitals, bus stops, gardens, police stations and government offices.

The current project will require the Smart City Corporation to spend around Rs 110 crore for setting up the infrastructure for the system and an additional of Rs 35 crore towards operational costs. Reports from Pune Mirror state that PMC plans to set up around 400-500 hotspot zones in the coming future. This is a major initiative of the Smart City policy that also includes provisions like emergency call boxes, public announcement systems, environmental and flood sensors.

L&T to convert Pune into Smart City

Larson and Toubro (L&T) has been given the project of converting Pune into a smart city. It has also been declared as its implementation partner. The letter of intent was given to the company’s smart world and communication business unit. It was handed over by the Municipal Commissioner of Pune Kunal Kumar. This is one of  the Prime Minister Narender Modi’s pet scheme.
After the execution of this project, Pune will have wifi at 200 locations across the city, environmental sensors, network connectivity, video analytic integration, emergency call boxes and public address systems.
According to the Financial Express, a Smart City Operation Centre (SCOC) will also be set up. It’s main function will be to integrate all its services and applications on a common platform. This development comes after L&T set up the largest surveillance project in Mumbai. They put up over 5,000 cameras in 1,500 areas in the city. They are also in the process of converting Nagpur into a smart city.

Bhubaneswar tops the list of 20 Smart City Project

On Thursday morning, Union Minister for Urban Development, M Venkaiah Naidu announced the top 20 cities for the smart city plan project, including Bhubaneswar which topped the list.

Pune, Jaipur, Surat, Kochi, Ahmedabad were few others which made it to the first list of the project, along with Bhubaneswar

“The states selected cities and sent us a list of 97 names. There was a competition among these names and 20 cities have been selected,” Naidu told a news conference. “Bottom up approach has been the key planning principle under Smart City Mission,” he added further.

“The Smart City Challenge Competition was as rigorous and demanding as the civil services competition conducted,” Naidu said.

The selected smart cities will be developed for basic infrastructure facilities, sanitation, solid waste management, IT connectivity, e-governance and citizen participation.

The plan of the smart city projects is to accommodate the rising urban population by 2022 which will be dealing with the four plan of actions namely, Swachch Bharat, Make in India, modern accounting system, rationalisation of property taxes and e-governance.

A total of 15.20 million citizens participated and shared their ideas on different social platforms which included better sewage treatment and transportation.

The city which topped the list, Bhubaneswar, the capital of Odisha, unfurled a 10 kilometer long canvas across the city on which the citizens wrote down their suggestions.

Other cities like Jaipur and Amritsar who have a rich heritage and tourist attractions mentioned of putting up CCTV cameras for security purposes.

Raising funds for the project will be a tricky task as it may involve total revamping of the city with rehabilitating people as well as acquisition of lands.
